‘Most of our material world, like the iceberg, lies beneath the threshold of our comprehension. Things flow past and rest silently as a sediment shaping our consciousness.’ Cummings, N. ‘Reading Things’ (14:1993)
Psychometry states that objects contain ‘energies’, ‘experiential vibrations’, even ‘souls’. It is believed that objects can be read through these energies – a history unfolded through touch and sensation – the edges of logic and rational thought skimmed and skirted around to reveal a new perspective, a new direction of thought.
Objects display their history through varying forms- the manner of their manufacture, their materiality, their marks and stains, their renovations and repairs, and the natural aging of material through time and function. Such details allow us to read objects, presenting clues to build up pictures or associations. But what of that which cannot be directly read or placed?
In their debut collaborative show, Sally Wright and Matt Day will investigate these themes through the exploration of surfaces, text and objects documented and played with to create, or give lease to particular energies and interpretations. Grasped or held objects from photographic portraits masked and hidden by household emulsion; marbled surfaces disorientating the eye through the documentation and display of its surface materiality; cleaning products creating surfaces and skins to deform what they should cleanse; and a collaborative artwork formed of handheld objects described by one (in 50 words), and interpreted by the other (as objects) – personality, aesthetic leanings and perception colouring the understanding of simple descriptive text.
